Programme Introduction

1. Singapore Compact for CSR is proud to present the Distinguished Lecture 2008 with Mr Toshio Arima, Former President and Executive Corporate Advisor of Fuji Xerox Co. Ltd & UN Global Compact Board Member & Chairman, Global Compact Board Japan, delivering his rich business experience and insights on “CSR as a Competitive Advantage: the Fuji Xerox Experience”.

2. Notably, Fuji Xerox is one of the CSR champions among businesses, having implemented strategies aimed at far more than compliance with respect to current regulations. Fuji Xerox believes that CSR is the fundamental concept of contributing to a sustainable society via mutual interaction between corporations and society. It takes its CSR role seriously and has developed guidelines and goals on how to achieve its CSR targets.

3. From environment to community to human resource management, Fuji Xerox has demonstrated that CSR can be easily integrated as part of its operations and can be used to derive competitive advantage for a company. It has proven that one can ensure operations are socially responsible while securing profit and branding. In 2000, Fuji Xerox was the first to achieve zero landfill of used products in Japan.

4. Mr Arima, who has been in Fuji Xerox for 41 years, is a strong advocate of CSR and has extensive experience in CSR management. He is well known for his aggressive efforts to promote CSR activities at Fuji Xerox, especially in the development of the International Resources Recycling System and ethical sourcing with partner companies. Mr Arima is also one of the business representatives and Japan’s sole member on the United Nations Global Compact Board which was formed to provide ongoing strategic policy advice for the initiative. He is also the chairman for the Board of the Global Compact Japan Network.
