Programme Introduction

1. The Workmen's Compensation Act provides an expedient, low-cost compensation system that is an alternative to claims under common law. The Act has been reviewed to ensure that it continues to ensure fair and prompt compensation, safeguard the interests of injured employees as well as protect employers against fraudulent claims.

2. The proposed amendments to the Workmen’s Compensation Act will be debated in Parliament in January 2008. The changes are expected to take effect from 1 April 2008, after which the Act would be renamed the Work Injury Compensation Act. The proposed changes include updating the compensation levels, expanding the coverage of the Act to cover more employees and enhancing the efficiency and effectiveness of the compensation process.

3. We have invited speaker from the Ministry of Manpower (MOM) to provide members with an overview of the current Workmen's Compensation Act and outline the proposed changes to the Act.

4. All members are encouraged to attend to understand the rationale behind the key changes, and how they impact on operational matters for your companies. Members will also have the opportunity to seek clarifications.
